SMR is a surgical procedure used to treat the enlargement of the nasal turbinates (conchae) inside the nose. This procedure aims to correct a condition where the bony structures or soft tissues known as conchae narrow or obstruct the airway within the nose. This type of concha enlargement can lead to respiratory issues such as nasal congestion, snoring, sleep apnea, and chronic sinusitis.
During the SMR procedure, an endoscope and surgical instruments are used through the nostrils. The conchal tissue inside the nose is removed or reduced, thereby allowing for increased airflow and reduced respiratory problems. This procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia, and patients are typically discharged on the same day.
