Rhinoplasty can be performed in all four seasons, contrary to popular belief. The difference with rhinoplasty performed in the summer is that patients need to pay more attention to factors for protecting their nose after the surgery.
Since the nose is a visible organ located in the center of the face and is the starting point for respiration, it requires more protection after surgery, both aesthetically and functionally, when the procedure is done during the summer.
It is crucial for patients to protect their skin from sunlight. Especially after open technique rhinoplasty, preventing direct sun exposure is important for the healthy closure of incisions and minimizing scarring. Sunscreen and wide-brimmed hats are helpful to shield the nose from heat and light and prevent changes in skin tone.
With the increased sunshine, people are more inclined to wear sunglasses in the summer. However, as noted for surgeries performed in winter, patients should avoid wearing glasses for at least three months (preferably six months) after surgery. The weight of the glasses can damage the shape of the nose during the healing period and may permanently impair breathing function due to pressure on the nose.
It is important for patients to protect their noses from water after surgery. Just like in winter, this is a critical point for patients. Plaster, splints, or packing placed inside and outside the nose should not come into contact with water. After surgeries performed in the summer, this is even more crucial as the desire to wash the face increases with rising temperatures.
If a patient lives in a city where they can easily protect their nose after surgery and is not engaging in any summer activities, there is not much difference in having the surgery in the summer versus winter from a medical perspective. The care required post-surgery is essentially the same for both seasons; the patient just needs to exert more effort to protect their nose.
Today, patients from all over the world visit our country during the summer, spend some time in the southern regions, and then undergo aesthetic operations in major cities, having their first post-operative check-ups here before returning to their home countries. This process is quite feasible for both doctors and patients. As long as the patient takes good care of their nose after rhinoplasty, the season becomes irrelevant.
