What is Allergic Rhinitis?
– Allergic rhinitis is a condition that, although not often emphasized, can significantly reduce the quality of daily life.
– It can decrease work/school performance, negatively affect social life, and create a feeling of persistent fatigue in the patient.
Rhinitis means a cold. Not every cold may be allergic. The primary cause of allergic rhinitis is the production of antibodies against substances that the patient’s body does not recognize. If a patient presents with complaints of an unending cold, the first condition that comes to mind is allergy. Seasonal colds are associated with pollen sensitivity. However, in some patients, this cold can be prolonged. This is primarily due to indoor allergens such as dust mites, pets, and mold spores. If not addressed, it can cause discomfort to the patient throughout the year. Asthma is also commonly seen in patients with allergic rhinitis; therefore, do not dismiss allergies lightly; be sure to consult your doctor!
